Meghalaya allocates 9 per cent of budget to medical sector, says CM

Guwahati: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has announced that the state government is dedicating nearly 9 per cent of its total budget to the medical and health sector, a move that prioritizes the well-being of its citizens.

This significant allocation is likely one of the highest in the country, demonstrating the government's commitment to healthcare.

During the inauguration of the Babies' Critical Care Unit at Ganesh Das Government Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Shillong, Sangma emphasized the importance of investing in state-of-the-art facilities, including ICUs and operating theatres, to meet National Medical Council standards.

The government aims to operationalize the Shillong Medical College by 2025 and the Tura Medical College by 2026, which will significantly impact the state's healthcare scenario.

Sangma expressed confidence that the first batch of MBBS students will commence their studies by 2025.

In addition to improving healthcare infrastructure, the government is focused on enhancing health facilities in rural areas, ensuring high-quality services, and upgrading accommodation for medical staff.

Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh acknowledged efforts to resolve issues faced by contractual health staff and encouraged state doctors to return and serve the people of Meghalaya.
