Meghalaya: Activist raises concerns over continued illegal sugar export to Bangladesh 

Guwahati: Social activist Nilberth Ch Marak has approached the Election Commission of India, highlighting the ongoing issue of illicit sugar exports to Bangladesh from Meghalaya.

Most of these exports are reported from the Garo Hills districts.

This complaint follows Nilberth's previous submission to the Election Commission regarding the familial ties between the Superintendent of Police of North Garo Hills, Bruno A Sangma, and Tura MP incumbent Agatha K Sangma, resulting in Bruno's replacement by Abraham T Sangma.

Nilberth's complaint extends to accuse Bruno and the Customs Officer of Gasuapara, South Garo Hills, of involvement in the illegal transportation of goods. Despite the replacement of Bruno, Nilberth asserts that the unauthorized export of sugar persists, evidenced by a recent bridge collapse incident in Joshipara, South Garo Hills. The collapse occurred when two overloaded Assam-registered lorries carrying sugar sacks traversed the bridge, exceeding its tonnage limit.

Nilberth claimed that despite the designated tonnage restriction of 9 tonnes on the bridge, the lorries were carrying loads exceeding 20 tonnes.

He added that there are negligent oversight of authorities in permitting the unchecked movement of overloaded trucks carrying sugar and onions to Bangladesh.
