Meghalaya: 50 per cent reservation sought for Khasi-Jaintias, 40 for Garos

Shillong: The Khasi Students' Union (KSU) and the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) have proposed significant changes to the reservation policy in Meghalaya.

In a meeting with the Expert Committee on Reservation Policy, the organizations suggested allocating 50 per cent of reservations to the Khasi-Jaintia category and 40 per cent to the Garo category.

During the meeting, the KSU proposed a 50 per cent reservation for the Khasi-Jaintia category and 40 per cent for Garo category.

They also state that 5 per cent reservation should be for other Scheduled Tribes (ST) and 5 per cent for the unreserved category.

Along with this, a 100 per cent reservation for Garos in Garo Hills and Khasi-Jaintia in Eastern Meghalaya for teaching positions was proposed.

Mother tongue instruction in lower and upper primary levels should be used, the KSU stated.

HYC proposed similar reservations but they demanded for a 93 per cent combined reservation for STs (Khasi, Jaintia and Garo included) with 2 per cent for SCs, and 5 per cent for unreserved category.

HYC also proposed for a separate legislation for reservation in educational institutions and higher studies outside the state and an increased reservation for STs in district-level posts and scientific services.

The Bethany Society emphasized the need for transparent implementation of the 4 per cent quota for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
