Meghalaya: 364 children found to have HIV, NCPCR calls for protection measures

Shillong: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has urged the Meghalaya government to provide financial assistance to children infected with HIV and their families, if eligible.

This comes after a review meeting with state officials.

NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo revealed that Meghalaya has 364 children living with HIV, highlighting the concerning situation.

The commission has requested the state to assess these children and their families for potential monetary benefits under relevant provisions.

The meeting also addressed other child rights issues.

The NCPCR raised concerns about the lack of female police officers and child welfare officers in some police stations, particularly in light of a recent gang rape incident.

They recommended appointing more women officers to better handle such cases.

The commission also requested data on children with disabilities in the state.
