WWII-era bombs unearthed in Manipur
IMPHAL: Unexploded bombs from the World War II era were unearthed in Kakching district of Manipur, raising concerns about safety in the area.
According to a Manipur police report on Thursday (June 06), workers at a brick kiln in Laimanai Mamang hills, under the jurisdiction of the Waikhong police station in Kakching district of Manipur, stumbled upon two old bombs while digging for earthworks.
The discovery was reported to the Manipur police by Elangbam Nabakumar, a resident of Imphal East district and the owner of the brick kiln.
Following this, a team from the Waikhong police station in Manipur rushed to the scene and safely collected the bombs, placing them under their custody.
On Thursday (June 06) afternoon, the Manipur police bomb detective and disposal squad conducted a controlled detonation of the bombs at a secure location near the hill range of the brick farm area, ensuring the safety of the surrounding area.
It may be mentioned here that Manipur served as a significant battleground during World War II.
Over the years, remnants of the conflict, including explosives and war materials, have been periodically discovered in Manipur and neighbouring Nagaland.
Intense fighting took place between Allied troops and the Japanese Army, supported by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose-led Indian National Army in 1944.
