NEW DELHI: In a renewed appeal, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Manipur, a state deeply scarred by ongoing ethnic violence.

Gandhi urged both central and state governments to prioritize efforts towards achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Manipur.

During a speech on Thursday, Gandhi shared insights from his recent meeting with a group of Manipuri individuals in Delhi.

These people, who have been directly impacted by the violence, spoke to Gandhi about the severe hardships they have faced since the outbreak of ethnic clashes in the northeastern state.

According to Gandhi, the group expressed deep anguish over being separated from their loved ones and described the heavy toll that the prolonged conflict has taken on their communities.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi recounted these conversations, highlighting the pervasive fear and insecurity that grips the people of Manipur.

He noted that many of those he met were so concerned for their safety that they requested anonymity, fearing potential retribution.

The ethnic violence, which has primarily involved clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities, has claimed more than 200 lives since it erupted in May of the previous year.

Despite the ongoing unrest, Gandhi has made multiple visits to Manipur, including a recent trip last month, marking his third visit since the violence began.

He also reaffirmed the Congress party's willingness to support any initiatives that would help restore peace and stability in Manipur.
