Brother shoots school principal dead in Manipur

Imphal: A school principal was shot dead by his younger brother following a family dispute in Manipur's Thoubal district on Saturday night.

Police said the victim, Sapam Swaminath, 47, was the principal of a higher-secondary English school in the district.

A police official said the altercation with his brother, Sapam Somorjit, 43, a bank ATM security guard, escalated into violence at their shared residence in Thoubal Ningolbam Singam Leikai.

According to police the official, the heated argument, which stemmed from a family matter, turned deadly when Somorjit fired a gun at his elder brother.

Swaminath sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was rushed to a hospital in Imphal but succumbed to his injuries en route.

Manipur police have arrested Somorjit, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

The weapon used in the crime has been seized, and a case has been registered. The victim's body is currently at the JNIMS hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
