The Imphal Polo Ground, also known as Mapal Kangjeibung, is recognized as the world's oldest polo ground and the birthplace of modern polo.

It evolved from the ancient Manipuri game of Sagol Kangjei, which was played for centuries on Manipuri ponies and influenced the global sport.

British officers discovered this local game in Manipur and adapted it, spreading it worldwide, while its roots remain firmly planted in Imphal’s historic grounds.

Historically, this ancient game dates back thousands of years and was used for royal rituals and martial training long before British involvement.

The independent kingdom of Manipur was under British rule from 1891 to 1947.

Under their influence, the unique Manipuri polo style, played with bamboo sticks and indigenous ponies, inspired the rules and spirit of the international game.
