Naga-Kuki clash in Manipur during UNC shutdown sparks fresh tension
Manipur: Tension flared in Manipur on Tuesday after incidents of stone-pelting were reported between Naga and Kuki groups on the first day of a three-day shutdown in Naga-inhabited areas of the state.
The shutdown was called by the United Naga Council (UNC) in coordination with the All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur from midnight on April 20. The protest was launched over the killing of two Naga civilians at TM Kasom along National Highway-202, the Imphal-Ukhrul road, on April 18.
On the first day of the shutdown, tension erupted between Changoubung Kuki villagers and residents of T. Khullen over enforcement of the bandh. Additional security personnel were rushed to the area to maintain law and order.
The Kukis reportedly opposed the protest, while a vehicle belonging to the Senapati District Students’ Association was allegedly vandalised amid the unrest.
As a result, educational institutions, businesses and banks remained closed in Naga-inhabited areas. However, essential services including media, religious ceremonies, fire services, medical facilities and water supply were exempted.
The Naga organisations also appealed to the public to observe a candlelight vigil on April 23 at 6:30 pm across all Naga district headquarters and in Imphal.
They further announced the suspension of social and economic ties with the Kuki community during the shutdown period, citing customary practices.
The organisations raised concerns over the alleged failure of security forces, noting that the incident took place near their deployment area.
The deceased were identified as Chinaoshang Shokwungnao and Yaruingam Vashum.
They also stated that the state government bears moral responsibility, pointing out that the incident occurred a day after the Chief Minister and Home Minister visited Ukhrul district.
Amid the escalating situation, the state government announced that the case would be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for a thorough investigation.
