Manipur’s displaced residents clash with security forces
Imphal: In Manipur’s Imphal East district, hundreds of residents displaced by the May 2023 ethnic violence clashed with security forces on Saturday while staying in relief camps.
The group, comprising residents who wanted to return to their homes in Gwaltabi on the district’s outskirts, began marching towards the area. Security personnel stopped them at Yaingangpokpi, triggering a confrontation and heightening tensions.
Security forces fired several rounds of tear gas to disperse the crowd and prevent the situation from spiralling further. The clash adds to a series of similar incidents reported since the Sangai Festival began on November 21.
Many among the displaced have spent over a year in relief camps after fleeing their homes due to the violence. Their attempts to return have repeatedly faced resistance, with authorities continuing to enforce movement restrictions in sensitive zones.
One protester, S. Ibemcha Devi, questioned the government’s assurances of restored normalcy. “According to the government, normalcy has returned. Then why are we not allowed to go home?” she said, echoing the frustration of many.
Officials said the situation remains tense but under control after dispersal efforts. Security forces have stepped up monitoring in the area amid festival activities and repeated attempts by displaced families to return.
Local reports indicate that similar confrontations have taken place multiple times in recent days, underscoring the prolonged hardship of the displaced community and the continuing challenge for authorities in maintaining order.
