Imphal: Manipur police apprehended a suspected cadre of the United People's Party of Kangleipak (UPPK) during an operation in the southern part of the state on Saturday.

The arrested cadre, identified as Nameirakpam Ningthou Meitei, 42, was taken into custody at Thamnapokpi village under the Moirang police station.

According to police, a team of Bishnupur district police commandos conducted a raid on a secluded location, acting on a tip-off.

The operation resulted in the arrest of the militant, who is believed to be involved in extortion activities in the southern Bishnupur district.

Police recovered Rs 10,000 in cash, three mobile phones, and a stolen Maruti Suzuki ALTO LXI car.

The vehicle's registration certificate was found to be in the name of Shamurailatpam Ibomcha Sharma of Khanarok Awang Leikai in Imphal East district.

Preliminary investigations suggest that he was operating under the direction of a UPPK member named Tayai. The arrested cadre is alleged to have extorted money from the general public in the area.

The seized items and impounded vehicle have been handed over to the Moirang police station for further investigation and legal proceedings.
