Manipur: Two UNLF-P cadres arrested in Imphal West for extortion activities

Imphal: A joint team of central security forces and Manipur Police Commandos arrested two alleged cadres of the insurgent group Pambei-led United National Liberation Front (UNLF-P), an outfit currently under a peace pact with both the central and state governments.

The arrests were made on Monday at Keystone Infra Pvt. Ltd., Awang Wabagai under Sekmai Police Station in Imphal West district, based on inputs from multiple sources, the police reported on Tuesday.

The arrested persons are:
i. Ningthoujam Nongpoknganba Meitei (31), of Soibam Leikai Ayangpalli Road, Imphal East district; present address – Kongba Ucheckon Lai Moriba, Imphal East district, and
ii. Konthoujam Nelson Singh, also known as Thomba (23), of Lambal Sabal Leikai, Imphal West district.

Items seized from their possession include:
i. one four-wheeler (Maruti Swift),
ii. four mobile phones,
iii. one sling bag, and
iv. two ID cards.

Police reported that the arrestees had carried out extortion activities in the northern parts of Imphal West district over the past few weeks. Officials later handed the two cadres, along with the seized items, over to the concerned police station for further legal action.

The valley-based Meitei militant organisation UNLF-P signed a peace agreement with the Government of India and the Manipur government on November 29, 2023.

UNLF, founded in 1964, is one of the most prominent Meitei insurgent groups in the Northeastern state of Manipur.
