Manipur: Two insurgents arrested for crimes against women, threatening truckers on NH 37
Imphal: Two individuals in Manipur, allegedly associated with different insurgent groups, were arrested on Sunday for involvement in crimes against women and threatening truck drivers on National Highway 37, which connects Silchar (Assam) to Imphal.
According to a Manipur police bulletin issued on Monday, a joint team of the central and state security forces arrested an active cadre of the outlawed People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak – Progressive (PREPAK PRO).
Khuraijam Shyam Singh, also known as Mangal (37), a resident of Lairensajik Mamang Leikai, Imphal West district, was captured at his residence.
He is accused of involvement in extortion activities in the valley and the illegal settlement or mediation of cases related to crimes against women.
One mobile phone was seized from his possession.
In the second phase of the operation, the joint team apprehended an active cadre of the United National Liberation Front – Pambei (UNLF-P).
Nongmaithem Bidyasagar Singh, also known as Kapchaoba (24), a resident of Khumbong Awang Leikai under Patsoi PS, Imphal West district, was nabbed from his residence.
He is also accused of extorting drivers by threatening them and snatching their documents and keys on the Jiribam-Imphal Road along NH 37.
From his possession, the following items were seized: one mobile handset and one Aadhaar card.
The UNLF-Pambei group, the oldest armed group in Manipur, is currently engaged in peace talks with the government.
A peace agreement between the government and UNLF-P was signed in New Delhi on November 29, 2023.
