Manipur: Truck driver killed in militant ambush on supply convoy in Ukhrul

Guwahati: A fatal attack on a security-escorted supply convoy in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Friday, May 29, left a truck driver dead after suspected militants opened fire, leading to an armed response from security forces.
Police said around 15 to 20 trucks carrying essential commodities were moving towards Ukhrul under protection of a joint team from the BSF, CRPF, and Manipur Police when they were targeted near TM Kasom.
The driver suffered severe injuries in the assault and died on the spot. Authorities were yet to confirm his identity at the time of reporting.
A brief exchange of fire followed as security personnel returned fire. Officials later stated that tension persisted in the area, with additional firing reported along the Imphal–Ukhrul road after the incident.
Earlier in the day, Shangkai village witnessed unrest when protesters attempted to halt supply trucks by setting tyres ablaze on the road.
Security forces used tear gas and smoke shells to disperse the crowd and secure passage for the convoy. At least five people were reported injured in the clash.
The ambush location lay about six kilometres away from Shangkai village, reflecting continuing security risks along the supply route to Ukhrul.
Authorities had already deployed armed escorts to ensure the safe movement of essential goods amid ongoing tension in the region.
The latest incident has again raised concerns about the safety of transport workers and uninterrupted supply movement.
Earlier this week, the Chief Minister met representatives of the Manipur Truck Owners’ Welfare Association and assured steps to strengthen security for highway transport.
A similar incident was reported on April 18 near TM Kasom village, where suspected militants opened fire and killed two people, including a former Army personnel.
