Imphal: The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has announced a 24-hour total shutdown across areas under its jurisdiction from 7 p.m. on June 8, demanding the removal of an Assam Rifles outpost at New Heaven along National Highway-202 and legal action against security personnel accused of using force against women protesters.

The shutdown was announced following a resolution adopted during a Joint Co-ordination Meeting held on Monday.

In a statement, the organisation said the protest was triggered by incidents at New Heaven, Shokvao and Finch Corner, where women demonstrators opposing the establishment of the Assam Rifles outpost were allegedly subjected to excessive force.

TNL demanded the immediate removal of the outpost and sought what it described as appropriate criminal action against personnel allegedly involved in the incidents.

The shutdown will remain in force for 24 hours across areas under the jurisdiction of the organisation.

However, essential services have been exempted from the protest. Medical services, water supply, electricity services and media operations will continue to function during the shutdown period.

The announcement comes amid growing tensions over the establishment of the Assam Rifles outpost, which has sparked protests involving local residents and civil society groups in the district.

No official response had been issued by the authorities regarding the demands raised by the organisation at the time of filing this report.
