Manipur: Security forces arrest PLA cadre involved in extortion
Imphal: Security forces arrested an insurgent involved in extortion during a house-to-house search operation at a vulnerable location in Manipur's Imphal West district on Thursday, the police reported on Friday.
Based on intelligence inputs from various sources, a joint team from the central and state police launched a cordon-and-search operation at Mayang Langjing Tamang village under Lamsang police station in Imphal West district.
The operation, which lasted around two hours, ended with the arrest of an active cadre of the proscribed Revolutionary People's Front (RPF), the political wing of the outlawed People's Liberation Army (PLA).
The arrestee was later identified as Laishram Premananda Singh (54), a resident of Mayang Langjing Tamang under Lamsang PS, Imphal West district. The police accused him of extorting brick fields, furniture shops, and members of the public.
Two mobile phones and an Aadhaar card were seized from him. He is currently at the concerned police station for further legal proceedings.
The report further stated that a total of 114 Nakas/checkpoints have been installed across different districts of Manipur, both in the hills and the valley.
Movement of 202 vehicles carrying essential items along NH-37 has been ensured.
Strict security measures have been implemented in all vulnerable locations, and security convoys are provided along sensitive stretches to ensure the free and safe movement of vehicles.
