Manipur scholars to represent state at global democracy conference in New Delhi

Imphal: The Election Commission of India (ECI) will host the inaugural India International Conference on Democracy and Election Management (IICDEM) 2026 from 21st to 23rd January 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.

The India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM), under the aegis of the ECI, is organising the three-day international conference.

The event aims to provide strategic interventions at a time when democracies worldwide are facing challenges such as disinformation, complex legal frameworks, and rapid digital and AI-driven transformations.

Addressing the media in Imphal on Thursday, Joint Chief Electoral Officer, Manipur, Lokeshor Brahmacharimayum, MCS, informed that a team from Manipur, led by the Chief Electoral Officer and accompanied by three subject experts, will participate in the conference.

The conference will bring together representatives from all 36 States and Union Territories, with India chairing the initiative as part of its Chairship of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) under the mandate of the ECI.

He further stated that the CEO, Manipur, has constituted a dedicated thematic group to carry out research and preparatory work on the theme allotted to the State by IIIDEM, New Delhi.

The Election Commission of India selected three scholars from Manipur, Md. Farijudin Khan, Assistant Professor, Dhanamanjuri University; Ng. Chinthoibi Chanu, Research Scholar, Manipur University; and Tim Haobam, Standing Counsel, Manipur High Court, to represent the State and present on the assigned theme: ‘Ease of Political Participation in Voter Registration.’
