Manipur allocates Rs 6.90 crore for hailstorm relief, 42 relief camps set up

IMPHAL: Manipur government has allocated Rs 6.90 crore to offer relief materials and compensation to families affected by the destructive hailstorms that struck various locations across the state.

In response to the calamity, authorities have established 42 relief camps in different districts across Manipur, providing shelter to hundreds of individuals whose homes were ravaged by the severe weather conditions.

According to preliminary assessments, over 15,000 houses suffered damage due to the hailstorms and heavy rainfall on Sunday (May 05), although a final evaluation is pending.

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh announced these measures while speaking to the media in Imphal on Monday (May 06) evening.

The allocated amount of Rs 6.90 crore has been disbursed from the Manipur State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) as an initial phase to address the aftermath of the natural disasters that affected 15 out of the state’s 16 districts.

Responding to queries from journalists regarding distribution of free food to affected individuals, the Manipur chief minister stated that state authorities, under the guidance of respective deputy commissioners, have initiated the provision of relief materials such as tarpaulins, GI sheets, and food items to those temporarily housed in relief camps.

Furthermore, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh assured compensation for victims of lightning strikes, addressing supplementary questions from reporters.

He noted that Imphal West district, with 6053 affected houses, and Imphal East district, with 5600 affected houses, bore the brunt of hailstorms on Sunday (May 05).

The Manipur chief minister urged affected individuals to submit their applications through the appropriate channels to expedite the compensation process.
