Imphal: Widespread protests demanding justice for children killed in a recent mortar blast in Bishnupur district continued across several valley districts of Manipur on Sunday, coinciding with curfew relaxation hours announced by the authorities.

In Imphal West, a major rally organised by Uripok Apunba Lup began from Lambui Khongnangkhong and marched towards Bazar Overbridge, drawing large crowds. Notably, many children participated in the demonstration, underscoring the emotional impact of the incident.

Similar protests were reported from multiple locations. In Imphal East, rallies originating from Ukhrul Road, Tinset Road, and Pangei Road converged at Lamlong Bazar, where thousands gathered. Demonstrations were also held in areas including Sangakpham, Irilbung Bazar, Mayang Imphal, Kongba Nandeibam Leikai, and Yumnam Huidrom, indicating that the agitation had spread widely across both Imphal East and Imphal West districts.

Protesters demanded accountability and a thorough investigation into the incident. “Residents, mothers, and local organisations have come together to seek justice for the two minors killed in the mortar attack and to protest alleged security lapses,” said Sunil Dhruv Singh, General Secretary of Uripok Apunba Lup.

In response to the prevailing situation, district magistrates of Imphal East, Imphal West, and Bishnupur relaxed the curfew from 5 am to 3 pm to facilitate movement and essential activities. Restrictions, however, remain in force from 3 pm to 5 am, with prohibitory orders on unlawful assembly and carrying of weapons or potentially harmful objects.

Authorities said essential services, including healthcare, electricity, water supply, banking, media, and telecommunications, have been exempted from the restrictions. Security forces have been deployed in sensitive areas and are maintaining heightened vigil to prevent any escalation.

The protests follow the incident in the Tronglaobi area of Moirang in Bishnupur district, where two minors were killed in a suspected mortar shell explosion that also left at least 25 people injured, sparking widespread outrage and grief.

Officials said the situation is being closely monitored, while reiterating their commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring that public concerns are addressed as the investigation progresses.
