IMPHAL: Opposition political parties on Wednesday demanded a special enquiry commission formation to probe into a sex scandal involving ministers, MLAs and VIPs as per the circulation of videos on social media in Manipur.

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, (MPCC), the main opposition party in the sixty-member Manipur Legislative Assembly through its frontal organisations submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Manipur Anusuiya Uikey concerning the circulation of videos on social media and local media platforms, purportedly exposing a sex racket implicating prominent political figures including two incumbent BJP ministers.

The memorandum specifically highlights the involvement of Kumarjit Laishram, 32, an alleged pimp and fashion designer who had previously faced punishment with a bullet wound from an underground outfit. According to Laishram’s account in the video uploaded on social media, two Ministers and top government officials were named in connection with the scandal.

“In such a situation, in the interest of the general public, particularly the women, we have decided to approach the State Government for initiating an enquiry to the satisfaction of the public as the authority is still silent over the issue,” the memorandum states.

The Congress demanded the establishment of a special enquiry commission to thoroughly investigate the allegations urging the governor to determine the veracity of the claims and ensure that justice is served under the law. The MPCC frontal outfits included Mahila Congress, Seva Dal, Youth Congress, and NSUI Manipur. The copies of the memorandum were also submitted to the chief minister and speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.

Speaking to media persons, Shiv Sena State unit president M Tombi said, "It is a matter of utter shame that many well-known political leaders are allegedly involved in sex scandals when the State is passing through a critical phase of ethnic violence that cost the lives of over 230 individuals since May 3, 2024, till date."

Additionally, Shiv Sena does not have any elected legislators in the state assembly.
