Imphal: Manipur Health Minister Sapam Ranjan Singh has warned the Government-appointed doctors against indulging in private practice.

At the 13th Foundation Day Celebration and Oath-Taking Ceremony of 1st Semester BSc Nursing Students, held at Imphal, the minister said that it had come to his notice that some government doctors, including medical officers, were rendering private practice and services simultaneously.

“This is a violation of norms,” he said, adding that the government would initiate legal action against the government doctors found indulging in private practice.

State health officials said numerous doctors working under the state and central governments often operate at private hospitals or clinics.

Many of them have their own clinics while others provide consultation services at the clinics owned either by relatives, parents or even spouses.

The problem here is that while they do come to government institutions and even perform their duties, they tend to focus more on their private practice, an official said.

The official also claimed to keep up with their private practice, some of the doctors do not pay full attention to the patients at government institutions.

As per state government's norms, doctors can either do a government job or private practice but not both at the same time.
