Manipur: Gunmen attack BJP leader's residence in Churachandpur
Imphal: Unknown armed assailants vandalized the residence of BJP spokesperson Michael Lamjathang Haokip in Manipur’s Churachandpur district.
Haokip, who is also a prominent leader of the Thadou tribes, was targeted just hours after participating in a Manipur-based news panel discussion on "Kuki Supremacy and its Agenda," according to a statement from the Thadou Community International (TCI).
The TCI condemned the attack as "cowardly and barbaric," reporting that approximately 30 attackers fired multiple gunshots and set fire to various properties within Haokip's residence.
The assault, which occurred at around 11 p.m. on Sunday in Phailien village under the Churachandpur Police Station jurisdiction, was described as an attack on the entire Thadou community and a broader assault on civilization.
The TCI has called on the government to take immediate legal action against those responsible.
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh took to social media, stating, "The attack on the family of Michael Lamjathang Haokip, a leader of the Thadou community and a BJP spokesperson, is an act of cowardice. This personal harm inflicted upon one of our recognized tribes is a direct challenge to the unity and integrity of the state."
Singh further condemned the attacks, saying that any violence against recognized tribes or individuals associated with the BJP would not be tolerated.
"We will take appropriate legal action against the perpetrators," he added.
