Manipur govt urges public to report extortion via new 24/7 helpline
Imphal: The Manipur government on Friday urged the public to join efforts in combating extortion.
N. Ashok Kumar, Commissioner cum Secretary of the Home Department of Manipur, stated in an official notification issued on Friday that the government has set up an Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) and a helpline, noting that “these activities pose a significant threat to the law and order situation.”
The notification further stated that the government has established an integrated AEC within the Home Department.
The unit brings together members of the state police, central armed police forces (CAPFs), and Assam Rifles/Indian Army to work jointly against extortion activities across the state.
For public reporting, the AEC has a toll-free helpline available 24/7. Citizens can report extortion threats received via calls, messages, letters, or other means.
Everyone, including government employees, is encouraged to report incidents promptly and cooperate fully with authorities.
The integrated AEC will respond quickly by coordinating with relevant police stations and security forces to take effective action.
The state government reiterated its strong commitment to maintaining law and order and called for continued public collaboration to combat extortion and related crimes.
The Manipur police arrested over 370 individuals involved in extortion and criminal intimidation cases in 2024.
