Imphal: The Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, on Tuesday reviewed the ongoing border-fencing works along the Indo-Myanmar border in the Manipur sector, a Raj Bhavan communique stated.

The Government of India has sanctioned Rs 31,000 crore to fence the entire 1,643 km India-Myanmar border, which includes a patrol track to improve surveillance.

Chairing a review meeting held at the Conference Hall of Raj Bhavan, Imphal, on Tuesday evening, the Governor reviewed the overall progress of the construction works along the border.

Senior Border Roads Organisation (BRO) officers, including the Additional Director General of Border Roads (East) and the Commanding Officer of the 25 Border Road Task Force (BRTF), briefed the Governor on the progress of the fencing, key operational issues, and the overall performance of the project.

They also flagged concerns related to security and communication and put forward recommendations to ensure faster and smoother execution of the remaining works.

The Governor appreciated the progress made so far and conveyed that necessary support would be extended by the government to address the concerns raised by the BRO.

The meeting was attended by the Chief Secretary, the DGP, the Additional Chief Secretary, the Commissioners, and senior officers from the BRO and Assam Rifles. Deputy Commissioners of border districts were also present.

The Indo-Myanmar border stretches across five Manipur districts—Churachandpur, Chandel, Kamjong, Tengnoupal, and Ukhrul—covering 398 kilometres.

India shares a 1,643-km-long border with Myanmar, and Manipur alone shares around 398 km of this porous border.

About 20 km of fencing has been completed in the Tengnoupal district of Manipur, bordering Myanmar in the south.

Notably, border trade at Moreh in Manipur has been closed since March 2022 for various reasons.

India and Myanmar signed a border trade agreement in 1994 and have two operational border trade points: Moreh in Manipur–Tamu (Myanmar) and Zokhawthar–Rih.
