Manipur government suspends three senior doctors amid crisis in Jiribam
Imphal: The Manipur government has suspended three senior doctors for failing to report to their assigned duties at the district hospital in Jiribam.
The suspension, effective Thursday (June 13), comes at a critical time as Jiribam in Manipur grapples with escalating violence and surge in internally displaced persons (IDPs) seeking refuge in relief camps.
According to an order issued by the joint secretary of the Manipur health and family welfare department, the three doctors have been placed under suspension pending disciplinary proceedings.
The order also notes that the suspension is linked to ongoing or contemplated disciplinary actions, or criminal cases against the doctors.
The suspended medical professionals are Dr Oinam Bisu Singh, a specialist in anaesthesia; Dr Laishram Oken Singh, a specialist in plastic surgery; and Dr Feiga Luckson Gangmei, also a specialist in anaesthesia.
Their suspension follows their failure to comply with a government directive to promptly join their designated posts at the Jiribam district hospital in Manipur.
Under sub-rule (1) of Rule 10 of the Central Civil Services (Classification and Appeal) Rules, 1965, the doctors have been ordered to remain at their respective headquarters in Imphal and are prohibited from leaving without government permission.
The unrest in Jiribam district of Manipur began on June 6, resulting in the destruction of around 100 houses belonging to various communities.
The violence has led to the displacement of approximately 1000 individuals, including women and children, who are now housed in relief camps.
The Jiribam district hospital in Manipur is under increased pressure as many of the displaced persons require medical attention.
