Manipur fuel dealers call indefinite strike after bomb blast at petrol pump

Guwahati: The Manipur Petroleum Dealers Fraternity (MPDF) on Thursday announced an indefinite shutdown of all petrol pumps across the valley areas and adjoining regions from January 10, citing serious security concerns following a recent bomb attack on a fuel station in Bishnupur district.

In a representation submitted to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the association said fuel pump owners, employees and infrastructure remain under threat despite assurances and measures taken by the state administration. The MPDF pointed to the bomb blast at a petrol pump as a clear indication of the prevailing law-and-order situation.

The dealers’ body said it unanimously decided to suspend operations until the government addresses its demands and ensures adequate protection for fuel outlets. It also sought compensation for the damage caused to the petrol pump targeted in the attack.

Unidentified miscreants hurled an explosive device at a fuel station in the Moirang area of Bishnupur district on Thursday night, triggering an explosion. No casualties were reported, but the incident has heightened anxiety among petrol pump operators.

The MPDF urged the government to deploy robust security arrangements at fuel stations across the state to prevent similar incidents. It also demanded that the government assume responsibility for any future attacks, including bombings or kidnappings, and provide compensation for damage to infrastructure as well as maximum monetary relief in the event of injuries or loss of life involving dealers or staff.

The indefinite shutdown is likely to disrupt fuel supplies across the valley region if the impasse continues.
