Imphal: In the 31st Sub-Junior & Senior National Thang-Ta Championship 2025, held recently in Goa, Manipur emerged as the overall team champion.

The representatives of the Huyel Langlon Thang-Ta Association, Manipur, called on the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, at Raj Bhavan, Imphal, on Friday.

During the interaction, the members briefed the Governor on the need to further promote Thang-Ta, a traditional martial art form of Manipur, across the nation.

They highlighted that Thang-Ta sportspersons from the state have consistently secured medals at national-level competitions, bringing pride to Manipur.

The delegation also discussed avenues to broaden participation and strengthen competitive standards, including the possibility of a Governor-led initiative to further encourage the discipline.

They appealed for the inclusion of Thang-Ta in the National Games, highlighting its cultural significance and rising popularity.

The Governor informed the delegation that their proposals would be taken up appropriately.

They further informed the Governor that Thang-Ta is an ancient martial art from Manipur, India, that combines sword (thang) and spear (ta) fighting with unarmed combat and meditative practices.

Also known as Huyen Lallong, it originated in the war environment of the historical kingdom of Manipur and served as a form of self-defense and warfare.

Today, it is a performing art and a way to instill discipline, health, and cultural pride, often taught in schools and showcased in festivals.

The Governor congratulated the athletes, coaches, and officials of the Association for this commendable achievement, acknowledging the dedication and discipline that contributed to the state’s success.
