Manipur CM claims decline in drug trafficking and poppy cultivation
Imphal: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh, on Wednesday (June 26), informed that drug trafficking cases have significantly declined in the state.
He credited this achievement to the efforts of the people of Manipur from both the hills and valleys, as well as the security forces.
Manipur CM Biren Singh stated that poppy plantations have decreased by 50-60% according to satellite data mapping.
“With support of hill village chiefs, valley-based CSOs and security forces, drug trafficking in the state has declined to some extent,” the Manipur chief minister said.
Manipur CM Biren Singh made this remark during an event commemorating the international day against drug abuse and illegal trafficking.

He pointed out that the 1990s were particularly challenging for Manipur, which faced a severe drug menace and a high rate of HIV-positive cases.
In response, his government has implemented a robust initiative against drug abuse, resulting in the arrest of numerous smugglers and individuals linked to international drug cartels.
In observance of the international day against drug abuse and illegal trafficking, the Manipur CM flagged off a bike rally from his secretariat.
The rally, which included over a hundred officers and security personnel, aims to raise awareness about the importance of combating cross-border illegal trafficking.
“With support from the masses, the government will remain committed to uprooting the drug menace from the state,” Singh said.
