Guwahati: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh tendered his resignation on Sunday, following a meeting with Governor Ajay Bhalla in Imphal.

Reports indicate that the Congress' threat of a no-confidence motion was the decisive factor behind Singh's exit.

According to insiders, the Congress was confident of securing support from BJP MLAs who were dissatisfied with Singh's leadership.

In the lead-up to Singh's resignation, significant administrative changes were made in the hill districts without the Chief Minister's explicit approval, further exacerbating the crisis.

Governor Ajay Bhalla has informed the Centre of the evolving situation.

Ginza Vualzong, ITLF Spokesperson said, "I believe he knew he would be voted out in the 'no confidence' voting in the Manipur Assembly, and to save his face, he must have submitted his resignation."

He added, "Also, with his audio tape leaked being taken up by the Supreme Court, I guess this time, even the BJP government can't do much to save him. Whether Biren is CM or not, our demand for separate administration remains the same."

He added, "We have been separated by the Meitei people, and there's no going back. So much blood has been shed. Only a political solution can redeem us."
