Imphal: A tense situation was reported in Chandel district, Manipur, on Saturday, as a combined force of central and state security personnel were prevented from reaching an ongoing construction site for an RCC bridge over the Manipur River.

A large group of women from Thingngaiphai village blocked the road leading to the construction site, using beams and felled trees to impede the progress of the joint team.

This action came in response to the government's directive to halt the bridge construction that was allegedly undertaken without official approval.

The bridge is being constructed near K Molnom village, located approximately 16 kilometres west of Serou village in Kakching district.

Serou village holds strategic significance due to its proximity to the borders of Chuchandpur, Chandel, and Bishnupur districts, with Kuki villages encircling it on three sides.

Reports indicate that the joint team, which included personnel from the BSF and Manipur Police, retreated from the area upon receiving information from Assam Rifles stationed there about a potential ambush by a large group of armed Kukis in the nearby Ukon Thngngaiphai hill range.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh confirmed that the state government had previously imposed restrictions on the bridge construction and that necessary actions will be taken to enforce them.
