Imphal: A bomb expert team from Indian paramilitary forces and Manipur police safely found and neutralised improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at a hotspot along the Jiribam district of Manipur, bordering Assam to the west, on Thursday.

Official reports on Friday said that after receiving information from the public about powerful explosives lying in the area, a joint team of the bomb detection and disposal squad of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police launched an intelligence-based operation around 2 pm.

During the search, using metal detectors and a sniffer dog, three Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), each weighing one kilogram and fitted with 20-metre cordex wires and detonators, were detected.

The devices were discovered in a pit in the forest between Nungchapi and Binselu, located in the Jiribam police station area.

The explosives were neutralised at the site, the report stated.

After a thorough search of the surrounding area, the team also recovered arms, ammunition, and explosive articles.

The recovered items included a Pompi gun, two .32 pistols, and two Pompi bombs.

These items were later handed over to the relevant police station, the report added.

Officials said the successful operation averted a potential major disaster in the district.

Jiribam is considered one of the sensitive districts affected by ethnic violence, with over 20 people, including 11 militants, 3 women, and 3 children, killed in late 2024.
