Manipur BJP projects assembly speaker as leader for government reinstatement
Imphal: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Manipur Pradesh, is optimistic following the green signal from the central leaders for the reinstatement of a new government in the state by November 2025, although the political outlook is still uncertain during the current President's Rule in Manipur.
This was stated by Lourembam Rameshwor Meetei, a member of the Manipur Legislative Assembly representing the BJP, to the media on the sidelines of a function at Imphal on Thursday.
Meetei said that unless the central leaders allow the formation of a new government by the end of November, BJP leaders and other elected legislators in the state are projecting the sitting Manipur Legislative Assembly speaker, Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, as their leader to form a new popular government in Manipur. "This is the last hope for the formation of a BJP-led government in Manipur," he said, adding that the government would be formed by MLAs from both the hill and valley districts of the state.
The Manipur Assembly has been under suspended animation since February 13, 2025, and the tenure of the assembly remains up to 2027, Meetei, who won from Keirao Assembly constituency in Imphal East district in the 2022 Manipur Legislative Assembly election, said.
He was first elected in the 2017 Manipur Legislative Assembly election, also from the same constituency.
When asked about the situation under the present President's Rule imposition in the state, the BJP leader said that people, especially the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), are suffering a lot.
Moreover, there are road blockade agitations in the southern Wangoo and Kumbi areas due to the government's failure to implement projects despite the availability of funds in galore.
During this President's Rule (PR) government, the state is under the rule of outsiders, whereas the elected legislators are mere onlookers.
Manipur has been under President's Rule, and the state assembly has been placed under administrative suspension since February 13, 2025, after BJP leader N. Biren Singh resigned as the chief minister on February 9, 2025.
The resignation followed amid criticisms about his government's handling of the ethnic clashes between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zos, which broke out on May 3, 2023, resulting in over 260 individuals losing their lives so far.
