Imphal: Amid tight security, the Manipur government began the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) as part of the first phase of its programme in Bishnupur district.

Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur, Pooja Elangbam, flagged off the IDPs from Leimaram High School Relief Camp for their resettlement in Leimaram Waroiching, under the revenue jurisdiction of Nambol Sub-Division in Village No. 27-Sadu Koireng.

A total of 257 IDPs from 64 households were resettled on Thursday.

During the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023, over 60,000 people were displaced and had been taking shelter in various relief camps across the state.

Addressing the gathering, DC Elangbam said that December 4, 2025, marks a significant milestone, as many IDPs are finally returning to their homes.

She highlighted that their return signifies a positive step towards building a better and peaceful society.

The DC added that the government has already disbursed funds to the families returning to Waroiching to support the reconstruction of their abandoned houses.

She further mentioned that the next installments would also be released soon. Reaffirming the government’s continued support, DC Elangbam emphasised that Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) assistance would continue for all individuals returning to their respective homes.

Encouraging the IDPs, she advised them to make proper use of the financial assistance provided by the government and extended her best wishes to all families for a stable and hopeful future.

Toijam Opendro, ADM Bishnupur; T. Shyamkumer, SDO Nambol; and other concerned officials were present at the flag-off site. At Waroiching, Th. Shangkar Deba, SP Bishnupur, led the security team during the resettlement process.

Highlighting the importance of education, the DC noted that students would now be able to resume their academic journey from their respective homes.

She also mentioned that the scholarship amount for students under Mission Vatsalya would soon be credited, which would help improve conditions and opportunities for the students.

The Manipur government aims to resettle all IDPs by the end of December 2025.

The administration had earlier assured that rehabilitation for IDPs from peripheral areas would be completed by December.

Recently, the government constituted state- and district-level committees to accelerate the rehabilitation process.

This move follows a month-long protest by IDPs demanding that the government fulfil its promise of immediate resettlement to their original villages.
