Manipur: Assam Rifles opens ‘Kinepna’ centre for displaced women in Churachandpur
Imphal: A Women Empowerment Centre named “Kinepna” (meaning ‘Hope’), a platform where women affected by displacement can regain stability and dignity through structured training in handloom weaving, tailoring, local crafts, and basic entrepreneurship, was opened in Manipur's Churachandpur district.
Several internally displaced persons (IDPs), mostly women in the district, have taken advantage of opportunities provided through these skill-building modules, which aimed to foster self-reliance and enable sustainable livelihoods, thereby contributing to the socio-economic resilience of the region.
Approximately 15,000 IDPs are living in 84 relief camps set up at various locations in Churachandpur district, predominantly inhabited by the Kuki Zo community, after the eruption of ethnic violence on May 3, 2023, which claimed over 260 lives and displaced around 60,000 people so far.
Established by the Assam Rifles to support displaced tribal women, the centre provides a safe and enabling environment that enables them to rebuild their lives through skill development and community support.
The inauguration was recently graced by the President of the Assam Rifles Wives Welfare Association (ARWWA), who formally opened the centre in the presence of over 150 personnel and attendees.
The event saw the participation of several Civil Society Organisations, reflecting collaboration between the Force and the local community.
Following the inauguration, the President of ARWWA interacted with instructors and beneficiaries, taking interest in the demonstrations that showcased the skills to be imparted at the centre.
The atmosphere was one of optimism and solidarity, with participants expressing hope that the centre would evolve into a support hub for women striving to reclaim independence and rebuild their lives.
A Defence Wing statement issued on Friday said that this initiative combines empowerment with community support, standing as a testament to the Assam Rifles’ commitment to inclusive development and welfare across the region.
By creating avenues for economic participation, the Force continues to strengthen its bond with the people it serves, reaffirming its role not only in security but also in social stability.
