Manipur: 38 Myanmar nationals deported, over 5000 still in camps

Guwahati: At least 38 Myanmar nationals who were staying in Manipur for the past few months were deported and sent back to their country.

The immigrants were sent back through the Indo-Myanmar border town of Moreh.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that the state was committed to identifying and deporting illegal immigrants.

The state has detected over 5,800 illegal immigrants in Kamjong district alone. Among them, 15 have died from natural causes and 359 have voluntarily returned to Myanmar.

Over 5,400 remain in camps set up across eight villages in Kamjong.

Biometric data has been collected for more than 5,100 of the immigrants. The district administration said it was working with police to step up security around the camps.
