Imphal: India's security forces apprehended an alleged drug peddler and recovered contraband heroin believed to have been smuggled across the Indo-Myanmar border through the porous Tengnoupal district of Manipur, officials stated on Sunday.

The Anti-Narcotics Squad of the Manipur Police, in coordination with the Kakching district police, arrested the alleged peddler, later identified as Kokhol Khulan, 22, a resident of Tarao Laimanai village in Chandel district of Manipur, which borders Myanmar to the south.

Police said Khulan was operating as part of a cross-border drug smuggling network in coordination with handlers in Myanmar.

Acting on a tip-off generated through technical surveillance and human intelligence, the joint team launched a surprise operation, successfully arresting the suspect from a hideout in the Kakching area of Kakching district.

Authorities seized from him nine soap cases containing 150 grams of heroin, locally known as No. 4, a two-wheeler, and a mobile phone.

A case has been registered, and the accused has been presented in court.

Police stated that they have obtained a remand for further interrogation to identify the source of the narcotics and their intended recipients.
