IMPHAL: A sudden flash flood hit the pre-fabricated houses at Kwakta Sericulture farm in Bishnupur district, Manipur, on Wednesday, affecting 130 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from 30 families.

The floodwaters, triggered by heavy rainfall and water gushing down from Thangjing hills, breached a concrete wall at the Moirang River, causing damage to belongings and displacing the inmates.

The unusually heavy rain that accompanied downpours and water running down from the Thangjing hills breached a concrete wall at the Moirang River at Kwakta Sericulture farm in the Bishnupur district of Manipur. The Moirang River is the only upstream River in Manipur.

Local MLA Thongam Shanti during the zero hours in the state assembly on Wednesday said that around 130 persons of 30 families including women and children from the 30 families currently taking shelter at the said relief camp were given shelters at safer places. These inmates are mostly from the Churachandpur district.

The flash floods characterized by raging torrents after heavy rains rip through the belongingness of the inmates residing at these temporary houses that were constructed at low places.

The floods have caused damage to various items including books, household articles, and Rs 40, 000 cash. The floods caused devastation from 5:30 am to 9 am on Wednesday. It also receded soon.

Additionally, Thongam Shanti stated that the state government cleansed the Moirang riverbed from Thangjing hills to Moirang bazaar, a distance of around 35 km seven months back.
