Makeup artist shot by insurgent group faces social boycott in Manipur
Imphal: Laishram Kumarjit, a well-known makeup artist and fashion designer, is facing social ostracization in his local community in Manipur following a violent incident.
On May 17, Kumarjit was abducted from his residence in Takyel Khongbal, Imphal West district, by militants belonging to the proscribed insurgent group, United National Liberation Front - Koireng (UNLF-K).
The following day, he was found with a gunshot wound to his left leg near a public health centre.
In a video message, a UNLF-K spokesperson, Pibarel Angomcha, claimed Kumarjit was punished for his involvement in the state's sex trade.

Following his release, Kumarjit reportedly confessed to his participation in the racket and named several high-profile clients, including government ministers and MLAs.
The Nambul Bank Cultural Association (NBCA) and Takyel Khongbal Women's Welfare Association (TWWA) have issued a joint statement condemning Kumarjit's actions and endorsing the UNLF-K's punishment. However, they have also called upon the insurgent group to refrain from such violence in the future.

The NBCA and TWWA have urged other militant groups to investigate the sex racket and expose those involved to dismantle the social stigma it inflicts upon Manipuri society.
Some Meira Paibi and local women's rights groups have refuted the accusations against government officials' involvement in the sex trade.
