Imphal: Normal life in Manipur's five valley districts came to a standstill on Saturday as all shops and business establishments in Imphal city remained closed in protest against demands for a separate administration by the Kuki-Zo community.

The bustling market centers of Khwairambam Ima Keithel, Paona market, and Thangal market were eerily quiet, reflecting the widespread public sentiment against the separatist demands.

While the number of people on the streets was reduced, a heightened security presence was evident to prevent any potential disturbances.

Public transport services were severely curtailed, with fewer private vehicles than usual. However, some auto-rickshaws and inter-district cabs continued to operate.

Inter-state transportation between Imphal and Silchar via Jiribam and between Dimapur and Imphal was completely disrupted. Educational institutions remained closed in solidarity with the ongoing protests.

Similar situations prevailed in other valley district headquarters, including Bishnupur, Moirang, Thoubal, and Kakching.

Inter-district bus services were suspended, but essential services such as electricity, water supply, medical pharmacies, and religious ceremonies continued uninterrupted.
