DoNER pushes polo development in Manipur to boost heritage and economy
Imphal: The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) actively works to develop polo in Manipur as a heritage and economic opportunity, with plans for improved infrastructure and international coaching.
This was stated by the Union Minister of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, during a meeting with the Governor of Manipur on Tuesday.
Polo originated in Manipur, India, where it was known as Sagol Kangjei, a traditional horseback game played for centuries. It was later adapted and introduced to the British, who popularized it globally as "polo," with Manipur recognized as the sport's birthplace, according to sources such as the Guinness Book of World Records.
A Lok Bhavan communique issued on Tuesday states that the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, along with Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, co-chaired a review meeting via video conferencing at the Conference Hall, Lok Bhavan, Imphal, to discuss the overall development of polo in Manipur.
The meeting reviewed proposals submitted by the State Government regarding a comprehensive development plan for polo in Manipur. The Union Minister advised the team to structure the proposal in a phased manner, ensure talent from various districts is identified based on geographic clusters, and link them to the centre of excellence.
The Governor assured that his suggestions would be incorporated into the forthcoming stages of planning and implementation.
The meeting emphasised efficiency and result-oriented implementation to accelerate overall development in the State.
The Chief Secretary, Secretary to the Governor, and senior officers were present during the review.
Additionally, the Indian government, through the Ministry of DoNER and Manipur's Tourism Department, promotes polo in Manipur by developing infrastructure, such as the Marjing Polo Complex with the world's tallest polo statue.
It also organizes international tournaments (Statehood Day Women's Polo, Manipur International Polo), supports local associations (MHRPA), fosters pony conservation (Polo Policy 2016, grassland allotment), and links polo with tourism (Sangai Festival) to boost both heritage and the economy.
