Brown sugar, opium worth Rs 10 cr seized along Manipur-Myanmar border
Imphal: In the significant crackdowns on drug smuggling, the Assam Rifles, along with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the CRPF, and Manipur police, seized brown sugar, a derivative of heroin, and opium originating from Myanmar, at different locations in Manipur.
Officials reported on Sunday that they recovered contraband drugs worth approximately Rs 10 crores from the international clandestine drug trade over the past 36 hours.
Based on specific information, the anti-smuggling unit of the Assam Rifles, in coordination with other law enforcers, raided a suspected location near T Jangnom, just 8 km from the Indo–Myanmar border in Chandel District, Manipur.
The first phase of operation successfully wound up with the recovery of around 105.25 kg of opium and 2.05 kg of brown sugar, worth Rs 9.37 Crores, near T Jangnom in Chandel District, Manipur, with Myanmar to the south.
In the second phase of operation, the joint security Forces recovered 21 soap cases containing suspected brown sugar weighing 240 grams (approx.) from road roadside of the inter-village road of Jatrapur village under Borobekra police station in Jiribam district of Manipur, with Assam state to the west.
Officials further stated that, although they made no arrests during the operations, the seizure dealt a major setback to narco-networks operating in the region.
The reports added that the successful operations underscored the power of inter-agency coordination and reaffirmed the collective commitment to combating the menace of narco-trafficking along India’s borders.
Authorities have registered two separate cases under the NDPS (Amendment) Act, 2023.
