Borun Thokchom’s 'Battlefield' premieres at IFFI 2025, showcases Manipur’s forgotten WWII history
Guwahati: Manipuri cinema received a major boost as director Borun Thokchom’s documentary Battlefield made its world premiere at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.
The film, selected in the prestigious Indian Panorama (Non-Feature) section, drew an enthusiastic response from festival delegates and cinephiles.
Produced by Manjoy Lourembam, Radhesyam Oinam, and Viswamithra Universals, Battlefield revisits the largely untold history of the Battle of Imphal, one of World War II’s most decisive confrontations between Japanese forces and Allied troops in Manipur.
Shot meticulously over ten years, the documentary journeys through the region’s forgotten war sites, guided by noted war researcher Rajeshwor Yumnam, who plays a central role in the narrative.
Following the film’s premiere, a red-carpet event brought together the director, cast, crew, and festival guests, celebrating what many described as a landmark moment for Manipuri storytelling on the national stage.
Critics and attendees praised Battlefield as a “moving cinematic reflection,” highlighting its blend of survivors’ memories, lived experiences, and historical insight. The film also draws attention to the stark contrast between elaborate international WWII commemorations and the relative silence surrounding Manipur’s ongoing humanitarian challenges.
The documentary’s journey to IFFI carries additional significance: it was developed under MSFDS’ “Imphal Documentor”, a five-day project development lab held in 2022 with support from the Documentary Resource Initiative (DRI), Kolkata, and the Television Cine Foundation Manipur.
This year, the Indian Panorama committee has selected 25 feature films and 20 non-feature films for IFFI 2025.
Adding to the state’s strong presence at the festival, Dinesh Naorem’s feature film Oitharei—chosen in the Panorama (Feature) category—will be screened on November 27. The film stars Suraj Ngashepam, Sanjuna, Sunny, and Nandakumar in lead roles.
