ATM robbery gang from Uttar Pradesh apprehended in Manipur

IMPHAL: A gang of ATM robbers, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested in the Northeast state of Manipur.

This was confirmed by Manipur police officials in Imphal.

The gang was engaged in fraudulent activities and stealing large sums of money by manipulating card reading devices in ATMs.

The four members of the gang are believed to have been involved in at least three similar incidents in the Imphal area of Manipur recently.

Their most recent attempt involved tampering with an ATM booth belonging to the Manipur State Cooperative Bank (MSCB) located at Thangal Keithel, the heart of Imphal city, resulting in fraudulent cash withdrawals.

Acting on a tip-off, the Manipur police managed to intercept them during their last attempt at the Thangal Keithel ATM Booth.

The arrests were facilitated by an FIR lodged by the Branch Manager of MSCB with the officer-in-charge of the city police station on April 30.

The complaint detailed multiple instances of fraudulent cash withdrawals from the ATM installed at the Imphal branch of the bank between February and April 2024.

According to Manipur police reports, the four accused managed to withdraw Rs 3,98,000 during this brief period.

Appearing before the court of chief judicial magistrate in Imphal West district of Manipur on Thursday (May 02), the accused were remanded to five-day judicial custody until May 06.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Narendra Pratap (30), Himansu Singh (30), Ajeet Singh (24) and Sarvesh Singh (28).

The accused have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including theft in a building, dishonestly breaking open containers containing property, attempting to commit offenses punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment, acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention, and relevant sections of the Arms Act.
