Manipur violence: Accused ‘confess’ to involvement in killing of Moreh SDPO

IMPHAL: Two individuals, who have been accused of being involved in the killing of sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Moreh in Manipur, have reportedly ‘confessed’ to have committed the crime.

The two accused persons – Philip Khaikholal Khongsai and Hemkholal Mate – were arrested for possession of arms and ammunition.

They have reportedly confessed to have been involved in the assassination of Manipur Police Service (MPS) officer Chingtham Anand Kumar, the SDPO of Moreh in Manipur.

Chingtham Anand Kumar was shot dead on October 31, 2023 by armed militants, while he was on duty overseeing the cleaning of the ground of Eastern Shine School for the construction of a helipad at Moreh in Manipur.

During police custody, on interrogation, they revealed that they were involved in the killing of the Moreh SDPO.

Accordingly, the investigating officer (IO) applied the formal arrest of the duo in connection with the case of the killing of Anand Chingtham.

The court of special judge NIA, Imphal West allowed for the formal arrest of the duo and, they were remanded into judicial custody till February 12.

Since the early morning of January 17, heavily armed militants launched further attacks on the state police forces using sophisticated weapons, killing two Manipur police personnel and injuring seven others at Moreh.
