Manipur: Two suspected UNLF cadres arrested in Ukhrul

Imphal: Two hardcore cadres of the proscribed United National Liberation Front (UNLF) have been arrested with the recovery of Rs 1.7 lakh in cash, a gold chain, and some incriminating documents in Manipur’s Ukhrul district bordering Myanmar on the east on Wednesday, officials said.

In a joint operation, the 35 Assam Rifles and Ukhrul Police apprehended two individuals from Viewland Zone III, Ukhrul on Wednesday.

The 35 Assam Rifles, under the supervision of Colonel Manoj Shinde, Commanding Officer of 35 Assam Rifles, apprehended two persons suspected to be Meitei underground operatives and seized Rs 1,71,500 in cash, including ammunition, a gold chain, four mobile phones, two wireless sets, and other documents.

The area was completely cordoned off during the operation.

“Based on credible intelligence, the troops of 35 Assam Rifles conducted swift search operations in a joint effort with Ukhrul Police personnel at Viewland Zone III around 01:00 pm and apprehended two persons,” said sources.

The apprehended individuals have been identified as Huidrom Jitanjit Singh and Tomba Luwang, suspected to be cadres of UNLF.

The arrested persons and recovery items have been handed over to the concerned police station for further proceedings, the police added.
