Manipur: Tribals take out massive rally demanding political solution to ethnic violence

Imphal: In a show of unity, thousands of tribals in Manipur rallied on Monday (June 24, 20240 ) demanding a political resolution to the ethnic clashes that have plagued the state for over a year.

The rallies, organized by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF), saw large gatherings in Churachandpur district and other tribal-dominated areas like Kangpokpi, Tengnoupal, and Pherzawl.

Carrying signs urging dialogue and self-determination, protestors called for an end to the violence. Messages like "No Political Solution, No Peace" and "Union Territory for the Kuki-Zo People Right Now!" reflected their desire for a separate political entity under Article 239A of the Indian Constitution.

ITLF Chairman Pagin Haokip emphasized the urgency for a central government intervention. "Tribals are demanding the creation of a Union Territory with a legislature," he stated.

The ITLF pointed out the ongoing hardships faced by tribal communities. Their statement detailed continued killings, displacements, and economic disruptions. Recent attacks in Jiribam district, including property destruction and abductions, underlined the fragile security situation.

"Over the past year, nearly 200 tribals have lost their lives, and more than 7,000 homes have been destroyed," the statement said.

It further pointed out disruptions in essential supplies and healthcare access in tribal areas, while development activities remained stalled.
