Manipur records highest dengue cases in recent years

Imphal: The spread of dengue in Manipur, particularly in the urban areas, has been on a sharp rise with four deaths and 1,459 cases of the vector-borne disease being reported between January 1 and October 16, 2024.

With this, the state has recorded the highest number of dengue cases in recent years, Manipur health officials said.

In contrast, Manipur recorded 203 dengue cases in 2021.

Medical Superintendent of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Dr Nepram Sanjib Singh said over 300 dengue cases have been registered in the hospital in the past two weeks.

The fatal disease has claimed four lives - three in Imphal West district and one in Bishnupur district – in the state so far this year.

However, the four districts - Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Pherzawl and Jiribam - have not reported a single dengue positive case till now.

Manipur has 16 districts and a majority of dengue cases have been detected in Imphal West district, which accounts for 1,022 positive cases and three deaths.

As per the Manipur health directorate, other than Imphal West, while Imphal East district has recorded 302 dengue positive cases, Bishnupur has reported 46 cases and one death.

Moreover, Thoubal has reported 43 dengue positive cases, Kakching (24), Kangpokpi (6), Chandel (4), Noney, Senapati and Ukhrul three each, Tamenglong (2) and Kamjong one.
