Manipur: Rapist sentenced to 10-year rigorous imprisonment

Imphal: A fast-track court in Manipur awarded 10-year rigorous imprisonment to a 32-year youth for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a teenage girl under Section 366 IPC and Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

According to the dossier of the Fast Track Special Court Number 1 Manipur, on December 3, 2016, Nameirakpam Premkumar alias Bungcha, who worked as a mechanic, kidnapped his then 13-year-old cousin sister in a Maruti Alto car and sexually assaulted her in Nambol area in Manipur’s Bishnupur district.

The next day, the victim’s mother complained to the concerned police station.

Since then the case went to trial and subsequently, the accused Premkumar was found guilty under sections 6 and 8 of the POCSO Act on January 18, 2024.

The court directed the state government to provide compensation of Rs. 2 lakh to the survivor’s family under the Victim Compensation Scheme or any other scheme or under Section 357 of CrPC, within 30 days.

During the sentencing hearing on January 25, police produced the convict, Premkumar of Thinungei, Bishnupur district and the court ordered him to pay a fine of Rs. 5000, failing which he would have to stay in jail for one more month.
