Imphal: Manipur police resorted to firing several rounds into the air to disperse an unruly mob that set fire to a vehicle involved in anti-drug campaigns.

An Anti-Drug Campaign (ADC) volunteer also sustained injuries during the mob's attack, according to officials.

The incident unfolded around 10 am on Thursday at Kwakta Ward Number Three under the jurisdiction of the Phoubakchao police station in Manipur's Bishnpur district.

Volunteers from the Anti-Drug Campaign in Ningthoukhong, Bishnupur district, successfully apprehended an alleged drug trafficker during their operation in and around the Ningthoubal bazaar.

Following interrogation, the ADC volunteers, in coordination with the police, conducted a raid on a notorious drug den led by one Mohammed Wakiwa, aged 45, at Kwakta bazaar in the same district.

As the ADC members and police team carried out the raid on the drug den, they were met with resistance from a hostile mob, which proceeded to set fire to a Gypsy utilized by the police.

One ADC volunteer, Khundrakpam Joy, aged 32, sustained injuries during the altercation and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the alleged kingpin of the drug den managed to evade capture, escaping from the scene.

However, police have identified the individual and are actively pursuing his apprehension. A case has been registered in connection with the incident, the police confirmed.
