Imphal: Officials at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal, Manipur thwarted a significant gold smuggling attempt on Tuesday.

Acting on intelligence received from across the border in Myanmar, a combined task force comprising the Anti-Smuggling Unit of Customs Division Imphal, Air Intelligence Unit, and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) apprehended a passenger attempting to smuggle gold to Kolkata.

Based on the tip-off, authorities detained a suspicious individual during routine baggage screening on Sunday.

He was then brought in for further investigation at the Customs Division office.

Following questioning, the suspect, whose identity is being withheld due to ongoing investigations, revealed the presence of smuggled gold.

A thorough examination, conducted with due respect for the passenger's privacy and involving female security personnel, led to the recovery of three gold pieces weighing a total of 972.28 grams.

The estimated market value of the seized gold is Rs 70,31,601.

The recovered items were cleverly disguised as eggs and concealed inside rubber sheaths hidden within the passenger's rectum.

The apprehended smuggler has been booked under the relevant sections of the Customs Act, 1962.
